Damariscotta River Association

Office Manager

The Damariscotta River Association (DRA) seeks an energetic and skilled office manager to assist with all aspects of non-profit land trust administration. Database, word processing, and spreadsheet expertise are required, and specific experience with desktop publishing software and GiftWorks or other membership database software is a plus. Strong organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills, as well as a high level of computer literacy to facilitate learning new software, are critical for success in this role. A familiarity with financial management systems, non-profits, development, and Maine foundations would be of help, as would graphical skills and experience coordinating volunteers. Candidates must understand and be willing to support the DRA’s conservation and education mission. This is a full time salaried position with benefits - compensation commensurate with experience. Maine Natural Areas Program

Field Ecology Intern

The Maine Natural Areas Program seeks a summer intern to assist with the inventory, monitoring, and assessment of natural communities and rare plants in various locations throughout Maine. Fieldwork activities include collection of ecological data (e.g., vegetation composition, soils, forest structure), identification of plants, and use of hand-held GPS. Some office work is required, including creating GIS maps, data entry and analysis, and landowner contact. Individuals must be able to work outdoors for long periods of time under a wide variety of conditions, including long hikes and some canoeing. Requires a strong interest in plant ecology, forestry, or wetland ecology, and unmitigated enthusiasm. Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcMap or ArcView is a plus, as well as familiarity with New England’s vegetation or related field experience. Position is 40 hours/week @ $11.00/hour. Some overnight travel is required. Position runs from approximately May 2010 to September 2010. Preference will be given to applications received by Friday February 26th, 2010.

Friends of Acadia

Field Crew Leader

Help preserve Acadia National Park. Award-winning conservation organization seeks a Field Crew Leader in the Stewardship Volunteer Program from May through November, (Monday – Saturday, 40 hours/week in summer not to exceed 980 hours/year) on Acadia’s trails, and carriage roads, as well as other outdoor projects. Plan and lead volunteer maintenance, construction, and repair efforts in cooperation with volunteer crew leaders, Acadia National Park volunteer coordinator, and Friends of Acadia projects coordinator. Ideal candidate will be great with people and multiple priorities, organized, and able to work hard at a physically and socially demanding job. Boothbay Region Land Trust

Education Coordinator

Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) seeks an Education Coordinator to develop and implement a new environmental education program with partner organizations. This is a two-year, 12 hour per week contracted position. Hours are flexible and will vary based on the schedules of established programs. There is an opportunity for the contract to be extended should additional funding be secured.

Relevant education and at least two years of environmental education experience is required. Knowledge of the land trust’s preserves and the local community is a plus. Downeast Summer Stewardship Assistant (part time)

Maine Coast Heritage trust (MCHT) is looking for a stewardship assistant to work under the direction of the regional steward during the summer months in the Cutler/Lubec area.

Major Responsibilities:
• Visit several MCHT preserves frequently to monitor public use and observe and report conditions to the regional steward;
• Trail maintenance, including brush and chain saw work, clipping vegetation, some work on bog bridging and possibly installing water bars on a trail;
• Mow designated areas on several preserves;
• Conduct a number of public walks on MCHT area preserves.

Skills and Experience Sought:
• Good verbal communications and interpersonal skills.
• Natural history/interpretation experience.
• Experience working in the field, alone and with others.
• Ability and desire to perform hard physical work.
• Experience operating and maintaining the following equipment: Chain saw, brush saw, GPS, map and compass, hand tools.
• Good sense of humor when the weather is bad and the bugs are biting.

• Valid Driver’s License and use of a vehicle.

SALARY:
The Downeast Summer Stewardship Assistant will be paid $13/hour on a bi-weekly basis subject to required withholdings. Maine Coast Heritage Trust

Marshall Island Stewards (two short-term, full-time positions)

CANDIDATES MUST APPLY AS A TEAM
The stewards work as a team, living on Marshall Island, a 1000-acre undeveloped, mainly forested island off the Maine coast. Marshall Island is located about seven miles southeast of Stonington, nine miles southwest of Mount Desert Island, and one mile south of Swans Island. The island is owned and conserved by Maine Coast Heritage Trust and is used by people from the surrounding areas and folks cruising the coast for picnicking, hiking and exploring. Currently there is a 9 mile trail network and 3 public campsites. The areas around a resident pair of nesting bald eagles and a private 10 acre lease area have been placed off-limits to the public.

The stewards will camp in tents provided by MCHT and are responsible for maintaining trails, monitoring and recording public use patterns, studying roosting and feeding patterns of the eagles and other wildlife, assisting with trail and campsite maintenance, setting up biological and use monitoring protocols, providing visitors with information about Maine Coast Heritage Trust and the island’s cultural and natural history, maintaining communication with the local community, and ensuring that visitors respect preserve guidelines and the private leased areas. The stewards will also be responsible for maintenance and operation of a 17’ motorboat and must be experienced with boat handling. The stewards have to be self-reliant, able to live in isolated/primitive conditions, and must enjoy communicating with many kinds of people. Familiarity with Maine coastal flora, fauna and culture, the ability to collect data, and experience with equipment maintenance are important and helpful skills for the stewards. Stewards ideally would spend 5 days on the island followed by 2 days off the island and weekends must be spent on the island.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity with coastal Maine flora, fauna, and culture.
- Experience handling outboard boats and navigation skills.
- Self-reliance and ability to work independently.
- Willingness to live in primitive and isolated conditions in housing provided.
- Interest in meeting and talking with a wide variety of people.
- Courtesy, tact, good judgment, good humor and patience.

SALARY: Each person will earn $12.00/hour, based on a 40 hour work week and paid on the 15th and last day of each month, subject to required withholdings. As short-term employees, you will be entitled to legally required benefits, i.e., Worker’s Compensation and Social Security (housing and boat transportation provided). This is a short-term, full-time, 40-hour week, 12-week employment for each person. Work-related travel will be reimbursed at $.50 per mile.

Whaleboat Island Caretaker (part-time position)

The Whaleboat Island Caretaker position is a part time summer position, from mid-June through Labor Day. The Caretaker represents Maine Coast Heritage Trust and is charged with monitoring use, educating island users, keeping an eye on natural occurrences, and taking care of the island in general.

The Caretaker will visit the island on Fridays and weekends to determine use patterns, and the number of day users and overnight campers. Visitor use data will be tallied daily on a reporting form provided by MCHT. Other tasks include picking up trash, replacing signage, removing inappropriate fire rings, managing vegetation, and monitoring other sensitive resources on the island (e.g. wildlife, historic features). The Caretaker will report weekly to the Regional Steward and will complete a summary report at the end of the season (due by September 30, 2010).

Depending on the circumstances, the Caretaker may occasionally be asked to camp overnight on the island. Occasionally, the Caretaker may be called to check out activities of concern or to take other staff or visitors to the island.

The position requires up to 20 hours per week.

NECESSARY SKILLS:
1. Enjoyment of people, the water, and islands.
2. Navigational, boat handling, and basic water safety skills.
3. Organizational skills and attention to detail in order to record data and write final report.
4. Excellent communication skills, especially verbal.
5. Ability to interact with people diplomatically and tactfully.
6. Ability to work independently.
7. Ability to perform physical tasks.
8. Willingness to learn about Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Whaleboat Island and communicate that knowledge to visitors.

Pay depends on the boat situation, up to $15/hr. If Caretaker uses his/her own boat, gas and oil expenses (for Whaleboat-related boat operation) are reimbursable.

Stewardship Crew Leader (short-term position)

Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) is looking for a crew leader who will supervise three crew members and work on many of the Trust’s 70 mainland and island preserves over the summer months. Work will include trail clearing, trail improvement (including building steps and erosion control structures), boundary marking, painting of structures, basic carpentry, and vegetation control (brush saw work, clipping, etc.) Although not directly responsible for public education, the crew will be representing MCHT and will be expected to interact positively with the public when there is an opportunity.

The crew will move frequently, although will occasionally work at the same site for more than one week. Accommodations for the crew will vary, depending on location. There will be cabins at some sites, other sites will require camping. Days will be long and days off will be clustered (possibly 8 on, 4 off). Some basic gear will be provided.

Some personal work gear, camping equipment, and mainland transportation will be needed. Boat transportation will be provided to island sites.

The MCHT Stewardship Crew Leader will supervise and work with a team of three additional crew members on different MCHT preserves along the Maine coast. The Crew Leader will be supervised by MCHT Regional Stewards, but will work autonomously much of the time. He/She will start two weeks before the crew to become familiar with the work sites and scope of work. The ability to coordinate tasks, accommodate changes due to weather and supervise others will be very important. Basic orientation to the work and to MCHT will be provided, but the Leader will be expected to have the following skills:

1. Good written and verbal communications and interpersonal skills.
2. Experience operating and maintaining the following equipment: chain saw, brush saw, GPS, map and compass.
3. Experience camping, setting up camp and allocating camp tasks.
4. Experience working in the field, alone and with others.
5. Trail building experience and knowledge.
6. Basic carpentry and painting skills.
7. The ability to motivate others.
8. Good sense of humor when the weather is bad and the bugs are biting.
9. Applicants must be 18 years or older and have experience working with a similar crew.
10. Valid Driver’s license and use of a vehicle.

SALARY: The Crew Leader will be paid $15/hour on a bi-weekly basis subject to required withholdings. As a short-term employee, you will be entitled to legally required benefits, i.e., Worker’s Compensation and Social Security (housing and boat transportation provided). Conservation Aide Intern

The MNAP conducts ongoing statewide inventories and monitoring efforts to document the location, condition, and status of Maine's biota. The Program maintains a comprehensive data management system consisting of computer, map, and manual files used primarily for planning and protection efforts for rare plant species and exemplary natural communities and ecosystems.

The Conservation Aide Intern will assist MNAP ecologists, environmental review, and data management staff with tasks such as:
- Digitizing parcel data for public and private land parcels
- Quality control of existing data
- Assisting with environmental review
- Transcribing information about the location and status of rare plants and natural communites into the MNAP's databases
- Reponding to information and publications requests
- Collecting and kinking landowner information to rare plant and natural community locations
- Maintaining and organizing files
- Summarizing field survey data
- Contacting landowners
- Drafting sections of final reports for Natural Resource Inventories, Ecological Reserve Monitoring, and Ecoregional Surveys

Desired Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of GIS and ArcMap 9.X
- Biology background, expecially ecology and biology of northeastern biota
- Strong computer skills
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail
- Willingness to work in an office environment

Work Schedule and Wage:
The internship wil be based at the MNAP office in Augusta. This a full-time, short-term (3 to 6 month) postition and pays $11.00 per hour.
